Nature of Work:
This is a specialized clerical and technical library work related to cataloging and processing new library materials. Performs a wide variety of tasks such as copy and continuation cataloging, rectification of bibliographic errors, processing and/or overseeing the processing of new materials and participates in the materials preservation program of the library. Incumbents apply judgment and initiative to evaluate and select alternative established courses of action. Making decisions regarding the application of established library procedures is a major job function. Work at this level requires greater understanding of the relationships and use of a broad range of bibliographic tools. General supervision is received with work reviewed in the form of observation, accuracy and completeness of tasks performed.
Examples of Work Performed:
1. Provide staffing at the Circulation Desk all hours library is open.
2. Respond to patron questions regarding circulation policies and procedures.
3. Hire, train, schedule, and evaluate work-study students.
4. Survey and maintain library stacks and stack areas so that materials are easily accessible to patrons.
5. Provide overdue and replacement book processing, including notices, fines, bills, and patron record holds.
6. Provide limited directional and informational public service, as appropriate.
7. Instruct patrons in the use of photocopiers, microform reader/printers and limited computer usage.
8. Maintain procedure manuals for circulation activities.
9. Open/Close the library.
10. Prepare and maintain library reserves for faculty and students.
11. Prepare and submit batch (fines, replacements, & service fees) for WSC Business Office.
12. Monitor & maintain “hold” shelf.
13. Pull and count monies from the copy card vend-machine.
14. Prepare library cash deposits and maintain records.
15. Balance cash drawers.
16. Coordinate production requests from other library units.
17. Pull routine manual and automated circulation reports.
18. Maintain Reciprocal Borrower program.
19. Assist the Technical Services department, performing “push-button” copy cataloging and some types of original pattern cataloging.
20. Verify catalog holdings vs OCLC database, selecting records for updating when appropriate
21. Perform routine catalog maintenance tasks.
22. Monitor materials for preservation treatments, updating online records.
23. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Graduation from a Senior High School supplemented by coursework in Library Science or related area and two years of work experience in a library or any combination of skills, knowledge and abilities that meet these requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Supervisory experience.
• Academic library experience.
