JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: Professional Tutor                                                    FLSA Status: Salary, Exempt       


Department: Student Support Services (SSS)                       Job Status: Full-time


Salary: $55,000-$60,000 DOE


 


Reports To: Director of Student Support Services  


Work Schedule: This position reports to the Director of Student Support Services (SSS). Hours will vary, but most will be day hours (8:30am-5:00pm) with some evening hours (such as to attend evening math classes and to assist on study nights) and possible weekend hours.

Purpose of Position:


This position will provide one-on-one and small group tutoring and lead Supplemental Instruction sessions that reinforce course material in designated courses, including math and statistics. The employee will support students in developing their mathematical understanding, problem-solving skills, and academic confidence. This position is essential to improving academic outcomes and retention in gateway and corequisite math courses, including College Algebra, Precalculus, and Statistics. The employee will also provide tutoring in composition and science courses. The position will attend designated classes on campus to assist instructors and provide individual tutoring when not in class or attending job-related meetings. A strong academic background in mathematics is necessary.


 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Tutoring):


• Tutor students face-to-face in math, statistics, composition, and other designated subjects. Tutoring may also occur online (via Zoom) or in hybrid formats.


• Assist students with understanding concepts, solving problems, homework, exam preparation, study strategies, and understanding course materials.


• Monitor student progress and adjust instructional methods accordingly.


• Collaborate with instructors, advisors, and other support staff to align tutoring with classroom expectations.


• Provide tutoring at study nights for midterms and finals.


• Flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, may be required to facilitate student needs.


• Maintain accurate records of tutoring session student outcomes.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Supplemental Instruction):


• Attend all assigned math course sessions to stay current with lectures, assignments, and professor expectations.


• Design and facilitate Supplemental Instruction sessions that encourage active learning, problem-solving, and peer collaboration.


• Create study guides, worksheets, and review materials based on course content.


• Encourage a supportive, inclusive, and non-remedial learning environment.


• Collect attendance and engagement data and participate in program assessments.


• General Responsibilities:


• Maintain office hours and schedule tutoring sessions with students as needed.


• Participate in professional development and regular team meetings.


• Consult with the Director of SSS regarding individual student concerns or progress.


• Attend student orientations, SSS department meetings, and faculty meetings.


• Maintain strict confidentiality required by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).


Skills:


• Strong math and composition skills.


• Effective verbal and listening skills.


• High level of computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Suite.


• Ability to work with Native American students and underserved communities.


 


Qualifications:


• Bachelor’s Degree in math or a math-related field is required.


• Proficiency in a range of math content areas (Pre-Algebra through Calculus) is required.


• Experience tutoring or teaching math, preferably at the high school or college level is preferred.


 


Travel: May be needed from time to time


 


Condition of Employment:


• This is a 100% on-site position.


• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background screen.


• Must be able to pass a drug screening.


• Must have a valid driver’s license without restrictions and must be insurable.
