The MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center Foundation is honored to present the 2019 Dr. George G. Spellman Annual Service Award to Dr. Dale Holdiman. Holdiman has served the Siouxland community and MercyOne Siouxand Medical Center for more than 40 years.

Named after the late Dr. George G. Spellman, a longtime Sioux City physician, the special award recognizes community members or groups whose generosity with their time, talent and treasure exemplifies the values of MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center.

Dr. Holdiman has practiced general Internal Medicine for the past 40 years in Sioux City. During his many years of service, Dr. Holdiman has served a member, President elect and President of the MercyOne Medical staff, Chairman of the Bylaws Committee, Member of the Iowa Board of Medical Examiners, Medical Director of Home Health and Medical Director of Hospice of Siouxland.

"Dr. Holdiman is loved and respected by his patients and colleagues. He has been an active member of MercyOne l s Medical Executive committee from 1989 to present serving in numerous roles. What I find as his most important quality is a kind, patient wisdom that he has developed through years of listening to patients at the bedside through the most difficult of moments and how he transfers that quality to all of his other roles," said Dr. Mark Abraham, President of the MercyOne Medical Staff.

Dr. Holdiman, a native of Waterloo, Iowa is a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then attended Law School at the University of Iowa before being drafted into the Army in 1969. He was stationed in Yuma, Arizona until 1970. After his military service, Dr. Holdiman went to medical school at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1976, then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Holdiman and his wife Barb have three daughters and are grandparents to three grandchildren, with one on the way. He is an Elder at the Central Baptist Church, and former Chairman of the Elder Council.

Dr. Spellman was one of Sioux City's pioneering physicians who established a reputation as an advocate for the poor and underserved. Dr. Spellman passed away in 2002.
